CDA Press: Press Release

Kastning runs for House seat

March 4, 2020 1:00 AM

Tim Kastning, a longtime resident of Kootenai County, is announcing his candidacy for representative in Kootenai County’s Legislative District 2B.

Kastning and his wife of 33 years, Karen Kastning, have eight children and have lived in the area for 28 years. He found his way to Idaho via the United States Air Force stationed at Mountain Home AFB. After serving in the Air Force from 1978 to 1982, he earned his degree and began a career in arboriculture in 1985.

During his career he has started and owned numerous businesses in the field of arboriculture including Grace Tree Service based in Hayden. He sold Grace Tree Service in 2015 and currently owns Arboricultural Consulting.

Kastning has volunteered with several boards and agencies, including the North Idaho College Workforce Training Center Advisory Board, board chairman of Coeur d’Alene Forest Coalition, Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and Northwest Property Alliance Board of Directors, Idaho State Community Forestry Advisory Council, Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls forestry advisory councils.

Kastning’s political experience includes serving as a member of the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee, where he served on the legislative, elections, and budget committees. He also served as Kootenai County Republican District 2 Chairman, North Idaho campaign director for lieutenant governor, Janice McGeachin, and Congressman Russ Fulcher’s northern regional director.

 KASTNING: Wins comparison test

SharePrint| April 17, 2020 1:00 AM

We have two Republican, family dedicated candidates running for legislature in District 2, Position B, Tim Kastning and Doug O. We use different lenses and priorities in reviewing differences between candidates — traditional values, Bible-based values, Constitutional support, transparency, etc.

Tim Kastning was founder/owner of Grace Tree Service, Hayden for 17 years. Doug O. is manager of Greyhound Park, Post Falls owned by the Greene Group, Tuscaloosa, Ala., investing in racetracks and gambling.

Both candidates have contributed to their community. Tim Kastning served in the U.S. Air Force, served on multiple boards/committees including North Idaho College, Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce, NIBCA and served on the city of Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls urban forest committees. Tim, as a small business owner, through Grace Tree Service, supported many community causes with these contributions coming from his pocket.

Doug O. has given more than a million dollars to our community through the Greene Idaho foundation, subsidiary of the Greene Group. It’s concerning that these outside contributions are primarily proceeds from gambling and CDA Racing, LLP. CDA Racing was founded to introduce and support gambling in Kootenai County.

Tim Kastning with no conflicts of interest can represent us without compromise. Doug O., according to Idaho code, needs to declare his conflict of interest regarding voting on gambling issues in Idaho.

Considering Tim’s strong traditional and family values, passion to defend us and the constitution, transparency, no outside conflicts, successful business leadership, military and local service record, my vote is for Tim Kastning.

I am writing this letter in support of Tim Kastning as a candidate for the state legislature in District Two.

I first met Tim as the owner of Grace Tree Service. My experience with his company as well as Tim directly over the course of several years gave me the confidence that Tim is a person who can be trusted. Particularly noteworthy when such a person wants to enter politics...he earned my respect as being good for his word in business, and as a business owner, appreciates the role of our free enterprise system and its virtues for our community.

I had the pleasure of meeting some of Tim’s family including his wonderful wife, Karen and three of their eight kids who are all an asset to our community. One of his daughters went to Hillsdale College, which is one of the most conservative colleges in the nation. The apple did not fall far from the tree.

Tim has also shown his colors by virtue of his service in the Air Force as well as his history of community service, which can be viewed in detail at

I hope that you will vote with me to help elect a person who is qualified, principled and committed to do the work for us in the Legislature.

Doug Okuniewicz is running for District 2, Seat B of the Idaho assembly as a Republican. He is not what his website claims him to be. Doug is a registered Lobbyist for Coeur d’Alene Racing LTD, an organization trying to bring back dog racing to Greyhound Park in Post Falls for gambling purposes. He is also president of AIM Management and president of the Greene Idaho Foundation, which is majority owned by Alabama investors as the Greene Group that promotes gambling and gaming interests across several states.

Doug Okuniewicz was Chairman of Winning For Idaho Political Action Committee (WFI PAC) up until he ran for the District 2B seat in 2016 (in which he was defeated by Republican John Green). The main focus of the WFI PAC was on gambling and gaming in Idaho controlling contributions of over $330,000 with Coeur d’Alene Racing LTD contributing $280,000. As of December 22, 2019, Doug Okuniewicz remains a registered lobbyist employed by Coeur d’Alene Racing, LTD.

As a lobbyist for these organizations, Doug has used the Coeur d’Alene Racing, LTD and Winning For Idaho PAC funds to fund various political candidates running for Idaho legislature, including over 20 Democrats and the Idaho Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (IDLCC).

My question to the voters in Idaho District 2 is whether they want to vote for a lobbyist who used dog racing funds to promote Democrats for Idaho legislative offices  where he hoped they would pass legislation to establish gambling and gaming at the Greyhound Park property in Post Falls?

Dan Green, former county commissioner

This year we see another election cycle and I would like to endorse Tim Kastning for Idaho House of Representatives, District 2, Seat B.

Air Force veteran, Tim Kastning, and his wife, Karen, have lived in North Idaho for 28 years and raised eight children, now ages 18 to 31, while running successful businesses. Since Tim’s retirement, he observed a need to better serve his community through involvement with the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee and contributed to the committee’s financial health while serving on its budget committee. He also served as Chairman of the Republican Legislative District 2.

At no time has there been a question of Tim’s integrity while managing his personal businesses or serving with any political entity. Tim has always maintained his support of our Bill of Rights, especially the right to keep and bear arms. Through his faith he will support children’s rights to life and parents’ educational freedom for their children, seek to lower taxes, facilitate government responsible spending, and limit government’s role in all our personal lives. He is a true conservative.

With Tim’s dedication to family, community, and his businesses, United States Congressman Russ Fulcher, Lieutenant Governor Janice McGeachin, and Idaho State Treasurer Julie Ellsworth have all endorsed Tim Kastning for Idaho House of Representative in District 2. I can say with no reservation, Tim Kastning is the ideal candidate for the seat as he continually demonstrated his commitment to his community, state, and country.

I have known Tim Kastning for approximately 10 years. We became friends on the golf course before we each became active in local politics.

The most important qualities of our elected officials are integrity and morality. Tim has both of these important character traits. He has a strong moral compass and I never question his integrity. He says what he means. He is respectful when we disagree and is willing to listen to other viewpoints, always remembering his core values.

He started Grace Tree Service and eventually sold it. He has the acumen to manage our tax dollars prudently and responsibly. He is a wonderful family man that has always put his family and God first.

He promotes individual liberties that are so consistent with many of us in north Idaho. He understands government’s role is to provide certain services, but at the same time that government is there to serve the people and not the other way around. I encourage you to vote for Tim Kastning for Idaho House seat 2B.

As a Kootenai County resident and voter, I am encouraging you to vote for Tim Kastning for Idaho State Representative Seat B.

Tim’s credentials and background include experience in politics, education, the military and community service. He founded and operated Grace Tree Service here locally for 17 years. I appreciate all small business owners since I was one years ago before I retired. It’s a lot of work and takes a strong constitution. You wear a lot of hats and you’re multitasking all the time, with having the added responsibility of your workers and their families on your mind whenever you make decisions. You know every decision you make affects a lot of people.

He has worked tirelessly to articulate his conservative and pro-constitutional views and agenda. We can see that with current events as they are now it is even more important than ever to have people in elected office who will stand up for the Constitution. He has shown he is a dedicated public servant, a man of integrity, compassion, caring and is willing to listen to all sides of an issue.

I believe Tim Kastning will be a true advocate for District 2 in Kootenai County.

I am proudly endorsing Tim Kastning for Legislative District Two, State Representative.

Over the past four years, I have had the honor and privilege of interacting with Tim on a regular basis. Through this, Tim and I have become good friends.

First and foremost, Tim is a committed and dedicated follower of Jesus Christ, making his Savior a priority in all his affairs. As a husband, father and grandfather, Tim’s devotion to family is unparalleled.

For many, many years, Tim has been in the trenches working tirelessly for Republican causes, garnering the experience necessary for an elected position, and proving himself to be a staunch promoter of the basic principles of conservatism, which are, respect for life, respect for the constitution, personal responsibility and less government.

Without a doubt, Tim Kastning is the best candidate to serve the constituents of Legislative District Two.

District 2 voters, please vote for Tim Kastning, who will represent YOUR interests in Boise.

Tim was a successful businessman over his 30-year career in the greens industry. His last business was Grace Tree Service, which he founded and then ran for 18 years.

Tim strongly opposes abortions and strongly supports our 2nd Amendment rights, as well as both our US and State Constitutions. He is a long time Conservative Idaho Republican, and has held numerous positions of leadership and important service as a Conservative Republican.

Please vote for Tim.

I urge you not to vote for his opponent, Doug Okuniewicz, who fully controls a very powerful registered lobbyist firm which is funded with huge sums of money by out of state gambling interests, which they then donate to both Republican and Democrat legislators in an attempt to influence their votes. Doug (O) wants to bring expanded gambling to Idaho.

First of all, we don’t want a Lobbyist as a legislator, let alone one who is funded by out of state gambling interests. Doug(O) is committed to expanded gambling in Idaho.

Please vote for Tim Kastning, a strong, long time Conservative Idahoan Republican.

Usually, I will write in support of my favorites, but this time one stands out far above most legislative candidates. Tim Kastning is running for Seat 2B. He has already filled in there for John Green and did a great job in his short time there.

Tim is the retired past owner of the successful Grace Tree Service, then he ran the office here for Congressman Russ Fulcher until deciding to run for this office.

He is one of the finest men you will ever know. His honesty, traditional values and love for his community are unmatched. He with wife Karen raised eight wonderful children while homeschooling them. I know him well as a fellow board member of the North West Property Owners Alliance, where he showed his strong commitment to protecting our property rights. He has also shown his conservative values as a District Chair in our local Republican Party.

I am concerned about his opponent who makes dubious claims. Through his PAC, Tim’s opponent has given nearly $400,000 to Democrat and Republican legislators since 2005, a major conflict of interest. He says he has nothing to do with gambling but makes money from his many gambling machine patents.

I would ask those who take voting seriously to at least Google the candidates. Vote for Tim Kastning, a true man of integrity and virtue who would represent us all well in Boise without being influenced by special interests!

It has been said that the only thing necessary for evil to prevail is for good men, and I would add women, to do nothing.

Most of us are not willing to step up to the plate in the fight against the relentless threat of creeping progressivism and socialism. Tim Kastning is and has stepped up front and center to the plate and is fully prepared to hit the first home run. He is fully willing to carry the torch for the unique values and strong beliefs that we hold in District 2 of the North Idaho Panhandle.

Tim Kastning has been carefully vetted and is strongly endorsed by our Facebook group, Kootenai County, Did You Know. Tim is a genuine Constitution and Liberty-loving patriot. He deeply believes in the founding principles of our forefathers. As a genuine principled conservative, we expect an all out effort from the entire left and from some within the R I N O establishment swamp within Idaho to fully work against his candidacy. Here in the North Idaho Panhandle we have very strongly held beliefs when it comes to our Liberties, Freedoms, Faith, over taxation, education and traditional family values.

Tim Kastning holds these EXACT same beliefs. He is not willing to jump in the fight for himself, but he is willing to jump in for you and I.

Don’t forget to vote, and remember that this time around you will need to vote via absentee ballot.

This year we have great candidates running for the second district Idaho State House of Representatives. However, there is one candidate that stands out as a longtime community leader and is the best suited to address the major concerns for our community: Tim Kastning.

He opposes locating the prison release center in Kootenai County; he supports eliminating the tax on groceries; he supports reducing property taxes and is a strong advocate for reducing government spending. For these reasons, he has my full support to be our next second district State Representative.

Integrity, honesty, Christianity and a desire to reduce the size of government are all important to me.  It is crucial to elect honorable representatives who will have virtues that align with mine.  Tim Kastning is just that candidate.  If Russ Fulcher, our Congressman for District 1 and Janice McGeachin, our Lieutenant Governor have both endorsed Tim then that is good enough for me.

Vote for Tim Kastning for the Legislative District 2B seat!

I am supporting Tim Kastning for Representative District 2B for several reasons.
First, Tim is a strong Christian man. He is a graduate of Baptist Bible College. He has been married for 34 years and has along with his wife, Karen, raised eight mature Christian children. He has ran several businesses always with Christian principles.
Second, Tim is a strong American. He supports and will defend both the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of Idaho. He is a supporter ALL of the Bill of Rights.
Third, Tim is a Conservative Republican. Tim supports the platforms of both the Idaho GOP and the National Republican Party. He is pro-life and believes life beings at conception.
Fourth, Tim does not support the Early Release in Kootenai County. Tim does not support statewide gambling. Tim does not support Urban Renewal Districts.

I am asking you to vote for Tim Kastning for Representative District 2B. Tim will represent every citizen of District 2. He will be an outstanding Representative in Boise.

It may seem like a daughter’s endorsement of her dad for public office would be a given, but I disagree. I think family relationships give insight into the full breadth of a person, especially that of a daughter and her father. Since I’ve seen him in about every situation possible, in peaks, valleys, joys, sorrows, good times and bad, I can honestly say I know Tim Kastning in the fullest sense. It took a while to narrow a description of him down to just a few words, but I believe these paint the clearest picture of my dad.

Selfless. He was always willing to trek across the country with me for travel softball, and he worked tirelessly to run his business in a successful, ethical way so he could provide for his family. My dad seeks to place others before himself. He is the embodiment of servant leadership, a quality unfortunately not found often enough in positions of public office. Tim would place the needs of his constituents first every time. Honest. With my dad, truthfulness is not optional. Being honest in all circumstances, even if it made you look bad, was one of the key values he instilled in us growing up. Taxpayers can rest assured that with Tim, they’ll get the full truth without exception.

Transparent. What you see is what you get. I truly don’t know of anyone else who is as genuine and authentic as my dad. Whether it was his time in the Air Force, teaching us the American ideals found in the Constitution, or his active involvement in the community, my dad has always been motivated to serve his country and his state. I think it’s important for voters to know that Christian and conservative values have always been my dad’s compass. With him there are no ulterior motives and there is nothing to hide.

My dad is so much more than these three words, but I think these are the most important for everyone to know. I am proud to be his daughter, and I am excited to see how he will help the state of Idaho. A vote for Tim Kastning is a vote for selflessness, honesty, and transparency.
